Curry : n. a food, dish, or sauce in Indian cuisine seasoned with a mixture of pungent spices; also : a food or dish seasoned with curry powder.

Bunny chow: n. is a slang term for a South African fast food consisting of a hollowed out loaf of bread filled with curry.

Venison: n. is a culinary name for deer meet, whether hunted or farmed.

Boeri : n. Savoury sausage developed by the Boers, the forebears of today's Afrikaners, some 200 years ago, and still popular at braais across South Africa. Also known as wors. From the Afrikaans boer (farmer) and wors (sausage, Dutch worst).

Hummus : n. dip or spread made from cooked, mashed chickpeas, blended with Tahini, olive oil, lemon juice, salt and garlic. It is a popular food throughout the Middle East.

Bobotie : n. is a South African dish consisting of spiced minced meat baked with an egg-based topping. The name derived from the Indonesian Bobotok. It is also made with curry powder leaving it with a slight "tang".

Falafel : n. a spicy mixture of ground vegetables (as chick-peas or fava beans) formed into balls or patties and then fried.

Kibbi : n. a vegetarian form of a Near Eastern dish made with garbanzo beans, pumpkin and Bulgur wheat that is eaten cooked.

Peri Peri : n. This is the hot East African sauce, which literally means chilly chilly in Swahili, made from dried and soaked piri-piri chillies that is a staple condiment used to accompany many East African soups and stews. Though the origin of this sauce is probably Portuguese.

Samosas : n. small, spicy, triangular-shaped savoury pie deep-fried in oil. Originally made by the Indian and Malay communities, Samosas – known as Samosas in Britain – are popular with all South Africans.
